Grow2Build – carried out in the period 2013-2015 – has worked towards the transition of the north west European economy from an oil based economy towards a biobased economy. Specific focus has been put on the integration of local sustainable cultivation of hemp and flax as the NWE region is particularly suitable for cultivation of these crops compared to other European regions. Hemp and flax crops can fit perfectly in a sustainable primary production system. This way the region can differentiate itself in its economic development through the exploitation of the strengths of the region, namely the ideal growing circumstances for hemp and flax and the historical expertise available on the cultivation and processing of these crops.
Grow2Build focused specifically on hemp and flax based building materials: Grow2Build wanted to tackle the remaining bottlenecks through the whole product chain of hemp and flax based bio building materials as well as in the marketing of those products. Grow2build aimed at developing this bio economical business in a sustainable and profitable way within the NWE region.
The business should be profitable for every stakeholder in the product chain. The challenges were situated at different fronts: there is a need for technical development and product innovation, new networks and an increase in market demand. Policy makers has been invited to get involved, as different policies have significant interferences with the development of these markets.
The main output of the project is to be found on the Output page.
